New Delhi:
The man who is attacked the most in the Liberhan Report says he has "neither remorse nor regret" over the Babri Masjid demolition.
The Liberhan Commission has indicted Kalyan Singh, who was the BJP's chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1992, for refusing to send in paramilitary forces till the demolition was completed. The Liberhan Report says Singh paralysed his administration into "ineffectiveness".
At a press conference on Tuesday, Singh rejected the Liberhan Report as one "that reeks of politics." Singh denied the report's finding that the demolition was a pre-planned and "tailor-made exercise." Singh clarified that he did stop security forces from opening fire during the demolition because he wanted to avoid casualties.
Kalyan denied that he had asked the district magistrate not to take action. "I had asked the DM to use all force, but not to fire. If they had fired then there would have been a stampede and thousands of lives would have been lost. I have been spared from committing this sin, even though the structure came down."
Asked about the report mentioning the name of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, Singh said, "It is totally baseless and irresponsible to drag the name of A B Vajpayee into this and this proves how biased and malafide the report is."
Earlier, Kalyan had said he was committed to protecting the monument, "but it came down, like despite security arrangements, Indira Gandhi was also shot dead, Rajiv Gandhi and John F Kennedy were killed."
