Amritsar, Punjab: Recent terror attacks have affected a decades-old tradition at the border on Independence Day. This time, Indian soldiers have decided against the exchange of sweets with Pakistani Rangers at the Atari Wagah border.
As part of building cordial relations with their counterparts, the Border Security Force (BSF) used to offer sweets to Pak Rangers on August 14, observed by Pakistan as their independence day. India celebrates its independence day on August 15.
Inspector General of the BSF, Anil Paliwal said, "This time we will not be exchanging sweets at the border. Extra vigil has been mounted on the borders. We have also got extra security forces from the headquarters and all of our officers are in field. Tight vigil is being maintained day and night."
On July 27, three terrorists unleashed a massive terror attack in the Punjab town of Dinanagar, killing 10 people. Two BSF soldiers were killed when two terrorists attacked a BSF convoy in Udhampur on August 5. One terrorist was killed, while the other was captured.
Earlier, Pak Rangers had refused to accept sweets on Eid day by the BSF last month.
According to the government records, there were 192 ceasefire violations along the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir till July 26 this year, which resulted in death of three civilians and one BSF personnel.
