Not against learning in English, tweets Rajnath Singh
New Delhi: BJP president Rajnath Singh has sought to clear the air on the recent controversy sparked by his remarks against the English language and said he has been quoted out of context.

Mr Singh, who is on a five-day visit to the US, tweeted on Saturday, "Reached New York today. Came to know about the controversy over my speech on English language. I have been quoted out of context."

"I am not against learning or expressing in English language. Watch my speech before you draw any conclusion," he said in another tweet.

Speaking at a function in the capital on Friday, Mr Singh reportedly expressed concern that the widespread use of the English language in the country has resulted in the loss of "our language and culture" as hardly anyone speaks in Sanskrit now.

His remarks had led to attacks from Congress. "I sometimes feel like laughing at our friends. On one side, their vision document is outsourced to people who don't speak any language other than English. Is this medievalism or hypocrisy?" Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari had said.

The Congress minister was alluding to reports that the BJP is prepping its vision document for the 2014 general elections with the help of several leading intellectuals and academics of the country.
