Not our line: Congress on Gujarat riots creating terror group
New Delhi: The Congress today said it does not agree with the contentious suggestion offered by one of its senior leaders that the terror group Indian Mujahideen was formed in response to the communal riots of Gujarat in 2002 in which hundreds of Muslims were killed.

Congress Vice president Rahul Gandhi, who addressed 200 party delegates at a large conclave on the party's communications strategy, allegedly said, "Spokespersons and panelists may have their individual views, but as party spokespersons and panelists you have to be within party line. We cannot go beyond party ideology. Those who go beyond will be noticed and action will be taken."

On Sunday, Shakeel Ahmed, General Secretary for the Congress, tweeted what appeared to be the latest attack on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was in his first term in office when the riots lacerated his state.

"Indian Mujahideen was formed after Gujarat riots, says NIA in its charge sheet. Even now BJP and RSS will not desist from their communal politics?" he posted on Twitter. He was referring to a chargesheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) after 10 serial blasts took place at Bodh Gaya in Bihar earlier this month.

"It is not the party line as of now," spokesperson Renuka Choudhary said today.

Today, Mr Ahmed clarified, again on Twitter: "No sane person can justify terror acts of IM or any other outfit. I simply mentioned NIA's version in its charge sheet highlighted by media."

The BJP has reviewed his original remark as "stupid" and "reprehensible" and said India cannot ignore the links that terror groups like the Mujahideen have to Pakistan.
