Arambam Amitabh, the policeman who was beaten by Manipur Speaker's escort team
Imphal:
The Speaker of Manipur has been accused of watching without lifting a finger as his escorts brutally attacked a police officer in front of his family on Tuesday night.
Arambam Amitabh, a sub-inspector, was with his wife and two children in a Maruti Gypsy when Speaker Lokeswar Singh's convoy came up from behind, flashing lights and blaring sirens. Mr Amitabh reportedly took a moment before letting the cars pass.
The Speaker's escort vehicles allegedly forced Mr Amitabh to stop his car, one stopping in front of him and the other pulling up behind him. The guards then pulled the policeman out and allegedly thrashed him.
Mr Amitabh, who is a gallantry award winner and a champion shooter, has cuts and bruises all over his body. He was allegedly butted with a service rifle and beat him with canes in front of his family.
The Speaker allegedly did nothing to stop his guards. When Mr Amitabh's wife tried to stop them, she was threatened with a stick.
After the assault, the convoy drove off.
The incident comes in the middle of a national debate over "VIP behaviour," especially politicians flaunting and abusing privileges accorded to them.
