New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party will hold a farmers' rally in Delhi today to protest against the government's land bill. The party's decision comes close on the heels of a similar rally by the Congress on Sunday.
Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal will address the rally at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
The party had earlier planned a march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament but cancelled it after the Delhi Police made it clear that the march would not be allowed. With Parliament in session, prohibitory orders under Section 144 are in place in the New Delhi area.
Lashing out at the Centre, AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Tuesday said the party will protest against the "deadly act" for the farmers tooth and nail.
"The BJP says that they have made necessary changes in the Act. This is nothing but a joke. What compelled the BJP to change the provisions of the Act, just after nine months in power? This is nothing but a move to benefit its industrialist friends," said Mr Singh.
The party said that farmers from Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha and the Bundelkhand and Poorvanchal belt of Uttar Pradesh will also participate in the rally.
Taking a jibe at Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, who had contested against him from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha polls last year, said he should first explain how businessman Robert Vadra - who is married to Mr Gandhi's sister - benefited in Haryana, referring to controversial land deals.
"He has come back from a vacation and his entertainment tour. The leader has been talking about the welfare of the farmers," said Mr Vishwas, referring to Mr Gandhi's 57-day sabbatical.
