Now, NSA on eve-teasing accused in UP

Kanpur, Lucknow:

After invoking then dropping the National Security Act against Varun Gandhi for his alleged hate speech, now the Uttar Pradesh government has proposed slapping the act against eve teasers.

Many feel it's a disproportionate punishment while others say it could be just to show Mayawati is not using the act as a political tool.

"District police has decided to invoke the NSA against those arrested on charges of eve teasing in the wake of rise in such incidents in the city," DIG (Kanpur Range) Hariram Sharma said.

In accordance with the decision, proceedings for invoking NSA against three youths who were arrested on Wednesday night from Harbansh Mohal area of the district for allegedly eve teasing two girls have been initiated.

Rishi, Sachin and Amit were arrested on the complaints of the girls, who have alleged that the trio along with one more boy had misbehaved with them when they were returning home after attending a family function.

The victims also accused the trio of beating their brothers who tried to stop them. The accused were allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.

The trio will be sent to jail today where action under the NSA would be initiated against them, the DIG added.

Meanwhile, police has also decided to post women cops in plain clothes near women colleges and schools and other places in the city. Strict instructions have been passed to all police stations to take prompt action whenever such incidents were reported.
