Ghaziabad:
Nupur Talwar, a dentist accused along with her husband Rajesh of the double murder of their only child Aarushi and their domestic help Hemraj, spent Monday night at Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad. She will now have to spend at least one more night there - the judge handling her request for bail has said he will share his verdict tomorrow.
Nupur is inmate No. 70 at Barrack No. 13, that houses 147 women prisoners at the Dasna Jail where her husband Rajesh had spent two months almost four years ago.
Nupur Talwar looked decidedly dejected when she arrived at the jail at around 6 pm yesterday, jail superintendent Veeresh Raj Sharma said. A few hours of watching TV with other women inmates and a discussion with them about the Aarushi case saw her relax a little, he said. Mrs Talwar reportedly told the other prisoners that she was innocent and would prove that in court.
The dentist had staple prison fare - daal, potato, rice and chappatis - for dinner at around 8.30 pm and slept in the barrack. She woke up early, at 5.30 am, bathed and recited the Hanuman Chalisa. She then lined up with prisoners to be counted.
Breakfast was tea, jaggery and roasted gram. The jail authorities said she also read the newspapers and asked for some books, including the Gita, which was issued to her once the prison library opened for the day.
While arguments on her bail plea were on in a Ghaziabad court, Rajesh, Nupur's mother and two other members of her family visited her in the jail. Their meeting lasted 20 minutes.
The prison authorities made it clear yesterday that Mrs Talwar's stay at Dasna Jail will not afford her any special concessions. She will have access to a television set, newspapers and books.
