Objection, My Lord! The 'Rotten' Court controversy

Objection, My Lord! The 'Rotten' Court controversy
New Delhi: A few days ago, the judges of the Allahabad High Court found themselves being described in less than flattering words. The criticism stung even more because it came from the Supreme Court.  Now, the High Court judges are striking back. They will take the Supreme Court judges who spoke against them to, well, the Supreme Court.

The High Court judges allege contempt of court, and want the remarks against them to be removed from court records.

"We are sorry to say, but a lot of complaints are coming against certain judges of the Allahabad High Court relating to their integrity,'' said Supreme Court judges.  They also said, "something is rotten in the Allahabad High Court," "relatives of judges practice in the same court" and ''sons of these judges become multi-millionaires within few years.''

The Supreme Court made these remarks. while scrapping a ruling by the Allahabad High Court that ordered the Waqf Board to allow a circus to use a part of its land for two months.

Activists and constitutional experts say the Supreme Court's remarks expose the corruption that's eating away at some parts of the judiciary.  On the issue of the High Court fighting its case, they say it's rare for a lower court to take on the Supreme Court in this manner.
