Handwara:
Protests have erupted in Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir after a man was killed in an Army ambush operation in Chogal village on Friday night. Police say the Army opened fire when it noticed suspicious movement.
Twenty-one-year-old Manzoor Ahmed Magray was an employee of the Border Roads Organisation. A probe has been ordered into the incident by the Army.
"We, though following rules of engagement laid down for such incidents, deeply regret the loss of life. More so because the Army has declared this year as the year of the Kashmiri awam. We also send our deep and heart-felt condolence to the grieved family," said Defence spokesperson Lt Col JS Brar.
Condemning the killing, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said the incident could have been avoided if a suggestion made by him at a meeting of the unified command had been implemented. However, he did not elaborate as to what the suggestion was.
"How can one not condemn the death of 21 year old Manzoor at the hands of the Army late last night. Another needless death in a bloody Kashmir," Omar posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
"Have been trying to understand the circumstances, lots of questions, but not enough answers at the moment," he added. (With PTI Inputs)
