On 26/11 anniversary, Chidambaram says Pak didn't keep promise

Mumbai: As the nation pays tribute to the martyrs of 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Home Minister P Chidambaram reminded Pakistan of the promises that it made.

In strong words, Chidambaram said Pakistan has the responsibility of bringing the perpetrators of the 26/11 attacks to justice.

"They promised us that they would provide voice samples of the persons whose names were handed over, but that has not been done so far," said Chidambaram at the martyrs' memorial in Mumbai.

He added, "While we trust our neighbour, we must always be vigilant."

Inaugurating a CNG filling station allocated by Mahanagar Gas to the family of 26/11 martyr cop Tukaram Ombale, Chidambaram said, "Ombale was unarmed when he faced two terrorists. He took bullets in his chest but did not let go. That's how Kasab was caught alive."

"If Kasab hadn't been caught alive, there would be no conclusive link to Pakistan in the 26/11 attacks," he added.

Paying homage to the martyrs of 26/11, the Home Minister said, "We must pay attention to proper training, weapons, and housing needs of the police force. 300, 000 vacancies in constabulary across country must be filled."

Chidambaram later paid homage to those killed in the terror strike at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) in south Mumbai. He also met family members of 26/11 martyrs, including Smita Salaskar and Kavita Karkare. (With PTI inputs)
