On a high, with RTI

On a high, with RTI
Bangalore: If you had come to the Consumer Redressal Forum building even last September, you might have had to climb up all six floors. But today you don't have to do that. Thanks to a 79-year-old Bangalorean and the power of RTI.

But getting a lift added to this government office is not S N Subramanya's only achievement.

In less than three years, since Parliament passed the landmark Right to Information Act, this retired sales officer has filed over 120 applications seeking information on parks falling to land grabbers and money swindled to renovate post-offices that don't exist.

"Lot of people visit that building, especially aged persons, physically handicapped people... I asked the owner why you have not put the other lift? He said he will take care of it. I waited for one and a half years but nothing happened. This prompted me to ask under the RTI act," says S N Subramanya.

His wife though is worried for his health and safety. "I feel he is great - that too in this age, that too after a heart operation. But he struggles a lot," says Mahalakshmi, his wife.

"They say, "Sir so many MPs and MLAs have tried, they couldn't, but you are able to do it", I tell them -  you must thank RTI for this," puts forth Subramanya.
