Varanasi: A group of six French tourists, along with their friends from India, were allegedly harassed on a visit to a waterfall in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur, close to Varanasi, on Sunday evening.
Eight people have been arrested.
When the tourists were wrapping up their visit, a couple of young men passed lewd remarks at the women in the group.
This led to an argument and then a fight. The men left but soon returned with 10 others. One of the tourists was injured in the fight that followed.
"A boy called Vivek gathered some more boys and they assaulted the group. One of the men sustained head injuries. In the FIR, there is no mention that the foreign tourists were assaulted. We have a video of one of the foreign tourists who says they were not hit but got scratches when they tried to stop the attackers," said Ashish Tiwari, a senior police officer.
Residents of the area intervened and managed to catch some of the attackers.
In October, a Swiss tourist couple were attacked in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra, leaving them with severe wounds and broken bones.
