A man was killed in an explosion at an office of the Trinamool Congress in West Midnapore district today, the police said. Five others were injured in the blast at the office of Mamata Banerjee's party at the West Bengal district, 130 km from Kolkata.
Photos of the explosion site show twisted metal rods and chunks of concrete strewn on the ground in front of the TMC office, as policemen walked about the compound to gather evidence.
The police are checking what caused the blast. The injured people have been admitted to hospital.
The explosion happened at 10 am, the police said, quoting witnesses.
People familiar with the matter said it is not known whether a crude bomb or a gas cylinder inside had exploded at the TMC office.
Trinamool legislator Pradyut Ghosh said the cause of the explosion could not be ascertained till noon and the police are looking into it, news agency Press Trust of India reported.
