Aligarh:
Two people were killed during clashes between two groups at the Aligarh Muslim University campus on Saturday evening.
Trouble started when a student was assaulted at the university's Mumtaz hostel and his room set afire, senior police officer Aligarh Range Govind Agarwal told PTI.
He rushed to the proctor's office to file his complaint. As soon as the news of the incident spread, students belonging to two rival factions gathered and a clash broke out.
Police said a student was shot dead on Saturday night near the Proctor's office where the groups exchanged fire with each other. Another person, who was not a student, died from his injuries later.
The students torched a jeep and several bikes. The mob also indulged in arson and set afire the proctor's office building.
A university official said tension between the rival groups has been simmering for quite some time now on the campus.
Police have registered a first information report or FIR against eight people, most of who are outsiders and former students.
Security has been stepped up and Rapid Action Force has been deployed on the campus which held an entrance test held today.
