Two people were killed and several people were severely injured when bombs were thrown last night at a neighbourhood in Bengal's Kankinara in North 24 Parganas district that saw clashes during the national elections last month.
68-year-old Md Mukhtar, his family members and their neighbours were sitting outside their homes in Baruipara last night when they were attacked. Md Moktar died on the spot. His wife was among those who were severely injured. Another person who was injured died later.
Heavy security has been deployed in the area after the bomb attack.
Kankinara, a part of the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat, and neighbouring towns of Bhatpara have been hit by poll-related violence since the national elections began last month when former Trinamool Congress legislator Arjun Singh joined the BJP and defeated sitting Trinamool MP Dinesh Trivedi.
MP Arjun Singh said the latest bomb attack not political violence, however, locals have claimed the two who have died were Trinamool workers.
Last month, train services were disrupted, houses and shops were set on fire as workers of the BJP and Trinamool Congress clashed with each other in the area.
A BJP worker, a resident of Kankinara, was also shot dead.
On May 30, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was heckled with "Jai Shree Ram" slogans in Kankipara. Angered by the slogans, Ms Banerjee got off her car and reprimanded the people, calling them "criminals" and "outsiders".
