Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti is a first-time MP from Fatehpur.
New Delhi:
Among 21 new faces in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet expansion on Sunday, only one woman got space.
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, 47, is a first-time MP from Fatehpur. She was one of the four parliamentarians from Uttar Pradesh inducted in the first cabinet expansion.
The Prime Minister already has seven high-profile women his ministry handling some of the key portfolios -- as many as six of them have cabinet rank.
For the 45-member cabinet announced in May, the figure showed the highest ratio in the history of the country.
Leading the pack is Sushma Swaraj, who handles the External Affairs ministry. Smriti Irani is the minister for Human Resources Development, Uma Bharti is the minister of Water Resources and Maneka Gandhi is the minister for Women and Child Development.
Harsimrat Kaur Badal, wife of Punjab deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, handles the Food processing Industries portfolio. Najma Heptullah, the 74-year-old former party vice-president, is handling the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
Former BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman is a minister of state with Independent charge, handling Commerce and Industry.
Jyoti, who keeps a low profile, had been in the news in June over an alleged attack on her in Fatehpur.
