New Delhi:
Army Chief General Dalbir Singh's visit to Kargil today was seen as one of the factors that contributed to some confusion on social media over the day India celebrates "Vijay Diwas" to remember martyrs who died in the 1999 border conflict.
"We won't allow another Kargil," General Singh said after paying tribute at the Kargil war memorial in Drass.
Among the tweets that talked about remembering the Kargil martyrs "today" was that of Union Minister Arun Jaitley.
In response, some sought to correct the minister.
The Kargil conflict was fought in the summer of 1999 to evict Pakistani soldiers who had intruded and occupied posts vacated for the winter on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
A commemorative function is held every year in the memory of the hundreds of Indian soldiers who died in the operation. The Indian Army lost 490 officers, soldiers and jawans in the two-month conflict.
