LK Advani, senior BJP leader, has quit all posts in the party, a day after he was over-ruled and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was given a whopping promotion. Here are some reactions on his resignation:
Rajnath Singh, BJP President, tweeted:
"I have not accepted Shri Advani ji's resignation."
KC Tyagi, JD(U) leader:
"This has now become an external issue, the NDA has gone on the ventilator. These are very difficult days for NDA, we will sit and decide the future course of action. In these circumstances, it will not be very easy for us to remain in the NDA."
Sushma Swaraj, senior BJP leader:
"It's unfortunate that our top leader has resigned. I spoke to him over the phone and informed him that I will be coming over to meet him. I am confident that we will persuade Advani ji."
Janardan Dwivedi, Congress leader:
"This is the beginning of the complete degeneration of the BJP. It will have its own repercussions. We have nothing to say on this. This is between the BJP and the person concerned to think and decide. We had already said that this (Modi's elevation) will have many repercussions.
Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena leader:
"Advani is BJP's Bhishma Pitamah. Should convince him to change decision."
M G Vaidya, RSS leader:
"It is shocking. He is entitled to his views. And an eighty-year-old can be unwell. But what he intends to achieve by resigning only he can explain."
Sharad Yadav, JD(U) chief:
"I am saddened by Adavni's resignation. NDA alliance was cobbled together by Atal and Advani. It is not good for the health of the NDA."
Renuka Choudhary, Congress spokesperson:
"I'm not surprised. BJP is politically bankrupt, they have sidelined people responsible for building it."
Kirti Azad, BJP leader:
"I am not sure why Advaniji has given his resignation. All I know is party has to take a call. The reason could be personal as well."
Mahesh Tapase, Maharashtra NCP spokesperson:
"The party with a difference is indeed a party with differences as is evident from Advani's resignation. The fate of NDA is sealed as BJP suffers NaMonia. The UPA will bounce back to power in 2014 Lok Sabha elections."
Nawab Malik, NCP spokesperson:
"BJP leaders don't respect and honour their seniors. Advani has shown courage, others should follow. Advani seems to have resigned as Narendra Modi was elevated. "
Shripad Naik, North Goa MP:
"Now, when the party was about to surge forward after yesterday's decision, he should not have resigned. He should have backed the party. This is really unfortunate."
Shakil Ahmed, Congress spokesperson:
"There were reports of severe differences with the NDA and now this is out in the open. Advani helped Modi establish himself. Modi took forward the communal politics and therefore Modi has become a bigger leader for the party. I don't think Modi will be able to deliver. Karnataka elections is proof of that."
Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister:
"This is purely an internal matter of BJP and it won't be good for me to comment. As for future alliance with BJP for Lok Sabha polls, I had stated my aim is to win all 40 seats."
