Operation Gajraj in Uttarakhand forest

Tarai forest: Elephants, being injured by speeding trains is an ongoing problem in many states.

Now an Injured elephant who was hit by a train in Uttarkhand is being treated by vets in the jungle itself. It is being called Operation Gajraj.

The doctors travelled five kilometers into the dense jungle to save the wild elephant, severely injured for the past four days after being hit by a train.

"It was very difficult for us. We didn't know the intensity of its injuries," said Dr Gautam Bhalla (veterinary doctor, Jim Corbett park).

The elephant was badly hurt in the rear while trying to cross the railway line.

"This was a challenge for us to medicate it, but we did it," said Dr Parag Madhukar Dhakate

The elephant is now a National Heritage animal. The forest department has filed a case against the train driver under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.

Approximately a dozen doctors and more than 50 workers were involved in Operation Gajraj.

The elephant is responding to the treatment and would be kept under observation for a week.
