Ordeal ends, Deoband scholar back home

Deoband: Relief, joy and a sense of being victimised. It was a flood of emotions that greeted Deoband scholar Noor-ul-Huda who is finally home, after spending 30 hours in jail.

"I went straight to meet my wife. There were tears in my eyes. She eagerly waited for me through the day," said Huda.

Noor-ul Huda and his father taught for many years at a Deoband campus. While Deobond is happy that Huda is finally back home, they want the investigating agencies to play a responsible and larger role to counter pre-existing prejudice within society.

"Not just the police and court, media as well should be responsible and create awareness whenever an innocent is caught for no fault. There should be case against that woman who unnecessarily created panic. The maulana hasn't done anything wrong," said Mulana Abdul Khalik Madrassi, Vice Chancellor of Daruloom.

Huda's childhood friend Athar Usmani is also shocked at how his friend who was on his way to attend a seminar in London landed in this unsavoury situation.

"I was shocked to hear about my friend. I always knew he was innocent," said Usmani.

The family also wants action against the police.

"It has been a terrible time for the family. We blame Delhi police for tarnishing my brother's image. We demand compensation," said Amrul Huda, Noor's brother.

It took the Home Minister's intervention to release Huda. But the community isn't sure if such incidents won't be repeated.
