Osmania students' pro-Telangana rally today

Hyderabad: Students will step up the Telangana stir on Sunday at Osmania University. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has given the students permission to hold a meeting.

The government has called for an all-party meet on January 5 to solve the issue. But the students of Osmania University are continuing with their protest for a separate Telangana state.

On Saturday, the Andhra Pradesh High Court allowed a pro-Telangana rally by as many as five lakh students, despite police denying permission.

Following the order, the Osmania Students Joint Action Committee (JAC) said it would go ahead with its proposed 'Telangana Vidyarthi Gajana'. JAC leaders said that all other authorities had given them a "cold response". "Police denied permission despite our repeated requests that the meeting would be peaceful," they said.

The JAC leaders met home minister Sabita Indra Reddy after the Hyderabad Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao made it clear that he cannot permit the meeting. The leaders said they got a cold response from the minister too.

They alleged that police in different districts are obstructing vehicles carrying students to Hyderabad. The city police have virtually cordoned off the entire university area preventing vehicular traffic. Even pedestrians were thoroughly questioned before they are allowed to enter the campus.

Central forces along with the state police are conducting vehicle checks at various points. Police have been heavily deployed at all vantage points to prevent students from entering in to the city.
