Outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar on his controversial tenure: Highlights

New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar, who retires on July 31, talks to NDTV about his controversial tenure.

Following are the highlights of his interview:

(On 2000 match-fixing scam)
  • No involvement of any Indian players
  • Group of bookies had access to South African players, not Indian players
  • Confusion in the minds of common people
  • This case is a separate matter
  • Group of bookies led by Hamid Qasim and Sanjiv Chawla targeted South African players
  • Mohammad Azharuddin case was just an inquiry, not an investigation. It was never sent to court
  • We had other people too under suspicion but never got evidence to prosecute them

    (On IPL match-fixing)
  • We still have a few bookies to catch, if something substantial comes up we will file a chargesheet against them too

  • Won't like to name people with vested interest against me
  • These were people I booked when I was in the CBI, they are very powerful
  • They've been after me since 2000
  • After 10 months of my tenure as police they went to court challenging my appointment
  • Fortunately the Delhi High Court court rule was in my favour
  • Will see about sharing evidence against these people once I retire
  • Yet to take a decision whether to name them or not, but I have the names, the sequence of evidence
  • Maybe will share the details with media soon

(On crime in Delhi)
  • Most definitely can say this city is now safer for women
  • Have put into place a system which is in two parts: One is the response part and other is the preventive part
  • Preventive part - we have more PCR vans, have identified routes frequented by working women late at night, intensified patrolling
  • We have list of people with past records of violence against women
  • At every police station we have a 24x7 help desk where a woman can go and lodge a report
  • If a cognizable case is made out, irrespective of jurisdiction, FIR is registered and matter taken up
  • Number of registered cases of crime against women have gone up
  • This is an indication of fact that our system of response to a woman in distress is much better and working
