Lucknow: Falling in Line with the Supreme Court's orders allowing only constitutional heads the use of lal battis (red beacon), the Uttar Pradesh government has scrapped the VIP status for several of its minister ranked VIPs.
A government order stated that the recommendations on the use of beacons and flashers recently issued by the Supreme Court must be implemented.
Uttar Pradesh has perhaps the largest number of red beacon users, with a Minister of state Rank bestowed on more than a 100 politicians appointed as chairman of state-run corporations and institutions.
The privilege will now be withdrawn.
