New Delhi:
The government has disconnected over 51,000 unregistered telephone numbers being used to carry out telemarketing activities till July, 2012.
Based on the provisions of the regulations, over 51,181 telephone numbers of subscribers not registered as telemarketer but carrying out telemarketing activities were disconnected till July 30, 2012, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Milind Deora said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Notices have been served on nearly 88,300 subscribers who have carried out similar violations, he added.
As per 'The Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2010', subscribers not registered with TRAI as telemarketers cannot make any commercial communication.
Data received from service providers show that the majority of complaints of Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) are against telecom subscribers who are not registered as telemarketer, Deora said.
In case it is found that the UCC originated from a subscriber who is not registered with TRAI as a telemarketer, the Originating Access Provider shall issue a notice to such subscriber to immediately discontinue sending such unsolicited commercial communications.
If this erring subscriber sends a commercial communication to any subscriber on a second occasion, the telecom resources of such subscriber are disconnected.
