Kathmandu:
Over 800 Nepalese students have benefited from financial and technical crash-courses in India under a scholarship programme launched by it in 2000.
India started the programme in Nepal as a part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative started in 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance by the government.
India offers more than 1900 scholarships annually to Nepalese students at various levels. More than 15,500 students have received training provided through the Embassy of India since 2005-06.
"The first batch of 12 Nepali ITEC participants went to India in the year 2000. Over the years, the number of seats allocated to Nepal under the ITEC programme has increased to 150 in 2013," the Indian embassy said in a statement today.
"From the year 2000 till date, more than 800 participants from Nepal have benefited from attending mid-career short-term professional training courses in India. ITEC is about co-operation and partnership for mutual benefit," it added.
India's contribution towards human resource development in Nepal was today celebrated at a function marking the 125th birth anniversary of the India's first Education Minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. The event was attended by Nepal's Vice President Parmanand Jha and Indian envoy Ranjit Rae.
India spends more than Rs.500 million annually on ITEC activities. Since 1964, India has provided USD 2 billion worth of technical assistance to developing countries including neighbouring countries under this programme.
"Over the years, India-Nepal co-operation has made major contribution towards human resource development in Nepal," the statement said.
