Guwahati: For asking a BJP lawmaker's driver to remove his car from the entrance of an official building, a government engineer in Assam was allegedly forced to touch the feet of the lawmaker and seek apology.
In a video aired by local channels, Jayanta Das, a junior engineer of a development block in Nagaon district, surrounded by a room full of people, was seen touching the feet of Dimbeswar Das, a legislator from Raha constituency in Assam.
The video had enraged social media and civil organisations leaving the state BJP red faced.
Dimbeswar Das had gone to Kothiatoli in his constituency, on January 19 to inaugurate a programme of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
As his vehicle was causing inconvenience to people's movement there, the engineer had asked the driver to park it elsewhere, but instead, he picked up a quarrel, said an eyewitness who did not wish to be named.
The driver complained to Dimbeswar Das who allegedly threatened the engineer and later asked him to apologise. The public apology was captured on phones and circulated on social media. The legislator said Jayanta Das was not forced but touched his feet on his own.
Congress, the main opposition party in Assam, attacked the BJP over the video. "This goes to show the culture within the BJP. They are arrogant and seek common poor as inferior and helpless," the leader of opposition in the Goa assembly Debabrata Saikia said.
BJP has sent a show cause notice to the legislator asking for a clarification "Let him reply. After that we will take action if he is found guilty" BJP state president Ranjit Dass told reporters in Guwahati.
