P Chidambaram Case: In INX Media case, P Chidambaram has been sent to CBI custody till Monday
Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, both senior lawyers arguing on behalf of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, produced today in a special CBI Court, contested a number of arguments made by investigating agencies. While Mr Sibal questioned how the CBI claimed Mr Chidambaram was not cooperating, Mr Singhvi questioned how the CBI was using Indrani Mukerjea, an accused in the INX media case, as the basis to make a case against the former union minister. The CBI court's verdict has allowed the agency custody to Mr Chidambaram till Monday. The CBI court has also allowed Mr Chidambaram's family and lawyers a daily half an hour visit.
, after the arguments made by Mr Sibal and Mr Singhvi as well as the CBI's counsel, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The CBI yesterday, in full view of television cameras, arrested P Chidambaram, from his south Delhi residence, by climbing the walls of his house.
The agency has asked for five days' custody, arguing that a "monumental and serious" offence like money laundering cannot be uncovered unless they are allowed to interrogate him in custody.

Congress briefing on P Chidambaram's arrest
The Congress is holding a press conference on senior leader P Chidambaram's arrest. "The vindictive and malicious manner in which former Home and Finance minister has been persecuted and prosecuted shows malice by the Modi government. This happens while the economy is suffering and the rupee has been the worst performing currency," Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

Karti Chidambaram, who has been accused of using his father's position to get foreign funds into INX Media -- a company founded by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, has denied any meeting with Ms Mukerjea. "Have never met Indrani Mukherjea, only time I met her was during CBI interrogation. Never met anyone in FIPB, don't know the process of FIPB," he said.
Karti Chidambaram said that his father was being targeted for his opposition to the government. "I was summoned 20 times, raided four times. They still don't have a case," he told reporters as he arrived at the Delhi airport this morning from Chennai.
A video of Mr Chidambaram at the opening of the very building where he was kept in custody last night - the CBI headquarters in central Delhi -- has been in wide circulation.
On June 30, 2011, Mr Chidambaram, the Home Minister at the time, was a special guest as then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the new complex.
The senior leader is seen on the stage along with colleagues like Kapil Sibal and Veerappa Moily.

P Chidambaram spent the night at the CBI headquarters after a dramatic arrest last evening. Mr Chidambaram was put up in "Lock-up suite 3" of the CBI building, which was inaugurated in 2011 in his presence; as Home Minister of the Congress-led government at the time, he was special guest and, along with then prime minister Manmohan Singh, was taken on a tour of the building and its lock-up facilities.
Formal questioning of Mr Chidambaram will start after 10 AM by the investigation team led by Parthasarathy, Dy SP.
After questioning, the Congress leader will be produced at Special CBI Court, Rouse Avenue post 12 noon.
"Law is above you": BJP's Tejasvi Surya on arrest
One of the first political reactions to Mr Chidambaram's arrest came from Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya. "Howsoever mighty you may be, the law is above you," he tweeted.
Union Minister Babul Supriyo later mocked Mr Chidambaram in a tweet for speaking on liberty during a press meet held at the Congress headquarters that evening. "Heard the Press Con @PChidambaram_IN ji held today at the @INCIndia HQ !He stressed about 'Liberty' ! Wonder if he was talking about the 'Liberty' to launder Money or evade arrest or is it the 'Liberty' to be entitled to be auto-exonerated of any wrongdoing bcoz he's from Congress!" he tweeted.
P Chidambaram Statement: "Between Life And Liberty, I Pick Liberty"
Hours before his arrest, Mr Chidambaram addressed at the Congress headquarters to present an explanation and an appeal of sorts. He said if given a choice between life and liberty, he would choose liberty. "I believe the foundation of democracy is liberty. If asked to choose between life and liberty, I would choose liberty," said the senior Congress leader who was not seen in public since the Delhi High court refused to protect him from arrest on Tuesday.
"All we wanted is a hearing. No one is running away," he added.
"I was aghast that I was accused of hiding from the law," said the 73-year-old. He was pursuing the law and that he has faith in the law "even if it is applied by an unequal hand" by the investigative agencies, he said.
"I was working alongside my lawyers whole of last night... and the whole day," Mr Chidambaram said, explaining his absence from the public eye.
"Respect for the law can mean only one thing -- await (the Supreme Court's) decision on Friday... Until Friday, let's hope the lamp of liberty will shine bright," he said in what was seen as a message to the investigative agencies that have been pursuing him since Tuesday evening.
P Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday evening after high drama outside his South Delhi home.
