Pak Chief Justice in India for Commonwealth Law Conference

Hyderabad: Legal luminaries from 53 countries, including the Chief Justices of 10 countries, will meet in Hyderabad for five days to discuss a wide range of legal issues with emphasis on maintenance of rule of law and human rights at the biennial Commonwealth Law Conference.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the conference at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre on Sunday.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will deliver the keynote address on the occasion. Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia will deliver the thematic address while Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily and a host of other legal luminaries will grace the occasion, according to former Attorney General and chairman of the conference organising committee Soli J Sorabjee.

"Emerging Economies and the Rule of Law: Challenges & Opportunities" would be the theme of the conference being held in India after a gap of four decades, Sorabjee told a press conference on Saturday evening along with Commonwealth Lawyers' Association president Mohamed J Husain.

Discussions at the conference would centre around promoting and maintaining rule of law, independence of the Bar and independence of the bench in Commonwealth countries, he said.

"The basic objective of the conference is to share experiences in delivering justice effectively. Legal systems are the same in all countries but there are problems in the delivery system," the former Attorney General noted.

"There will be about 60 substantive sessions in the four days on varied issues like constitutionalism and human rights, judicial independence, protection of human rights lawyers, free and fair elections, impact of globalisation on human rights, rights of religious minorities and contemporary legal topics.

Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, judge of Supreme Court of India, Lord Lester of Herne Hill QC, a leading barrister from the UK, Sir Sidney Kentridge QC, a doyen of the English and South African Bars, will deliver keynote addresses during the sessions, Sorabjee said.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma would be among the speakers.
