Pakistani forces today targeted Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in Mankote and KG sectors in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, after which the Indian Army also opened up on the Pakistani posts in retaliation against the ceasefire violation.
"At about 0900 hours, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation with firing of small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Mendhar sector," an Army spokesman said, news agency PTI reported.
The firing triggered panic among residents along the border, who have been asked to stay at safer places.
The firing from across the border took place on a day when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is on a visit to Dras to pay tributes to soldiers who died in the Kargil war 20 years ago.
