New Delhi: Pakistan has strongly reacted to the launch of India's first indigenous nuclear submarine - INS Arihant.

Criticising the move, the Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Abdul Basit said India's launch of a nuclear-powered submarine was a threat to regional peace and security. Basit said, "Pakistan will take appropriate steps to safeguard its security without entering an arms race.

The submarine, unveiled at a ceremony on Sunday, will be able to launch missiles at targets 700km away.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the submarine.

At the heart of this submarine is a small nuclear reactor, built in a secret facility of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Kalpakkam.

The reactor on the submarine will be fired a few months from now after rigorous testing is over in Vizag.
