Pakistan is protecting 26/11 masterminds: Chidambaram

New Delhi: Referring to Hafiz Saeed, the man who India believes is the mastermind of  26/11, P Chidambaram has said that Pakistan is shielding key players involved with the attack against Mumbai in 2008.

Pakistan has repeatedly said that India has not provided it with evidence of Saeed's role in 26/11. Saeed is the chief of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), which was declared a terrorist group a year ago by the United Nations for serving as a front for the LeT.

Meanwhile, speaking to NDTV's Barkha Dutt in London, the Pakistani Foreign Minister said it's unrealistic for Pakistan to guarantee that there will not be another 26/11 in India.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Pakistan's Prime minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani , was being realistic when he made a similar statement earlier this month. Qureshi also reiterated what Gilani had said: that "Pakistanis are also victims of extremist elements" and that "extremist elements sometimes get away. Qureshi claims that India "lacks the oomph to resume dialogue" with his country.

On Wednesday, Pakistani made public a report that documents its investigations into the 26/11 attacks. The report, presented a Rawalpindi court, says there is enough evidence to prove that the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is behind 26/11. Pakistan holds Zaki Ur Rehman Lakhvi, the Operations Commander of the LeT, responsible for organizing the attacks.

Seven alleged terrorists, including Lakhvi, are being tried for their role in 26/11 by the anti-terror court in Rawalpindi.

The 61-page Pakistani report contains the photographs of all the accused, including those who have yet to be caught and have been declared "proclaimed offenders."  They include crew members of the Al-Fauz and Hussaini, the two boats used by the ten terrorists who attacked Mumbai.

Hafiz Saeed was put under house arrest for six months last year by the government but was released after a court ruled that his detention was illegal.
