Qadian, Punjab: A Pakistani woman who married a Indian national in 2003 and has been residing in Qadian town of Gurdaspur district will get Indian citizenship, official sources said on Sunday.
Tahira Hazoor, who hailed from Faislabad in Pakistan married Indian citizen Maqbool Ahmad, a resident of Qadian town in Gurdaspur district in 2003. She applied for Indian citizenship on March,9, 2011 after concluding a stipulated period of seven years.
Tahira received a message from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs stating that she will get Indian citizenship. The decision to this effect was also conveyed to Tahira and her family by then Deputy Commissioner Gurdaspur Abhinav Trikha who visited her family at Qadian town on Saturday evening, official sources said.
Punjab government also recommended her citizenship case to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs but she was neither granted Indian citizenship nor a temporary visa for Pakistan.
When contacted Tahira Hazoor expressed hope that she would get the certificate pertaining to the citizenship from the deputy commissioner office next week and would apply Indian passport.
