Panel blames school for Akkriti's death

Panel blames school for Akkriti's death
New Delhi: The Delhi government-appointed committee formed to probe the death of 17-year-old Akkriti Bhatia has found lapses on the part of school authorities that led to the tragedy. Akkriti suffered asthma attack in her school and succumbed on way to hospital.

The committee headed by regional director of Education Sunita S Koshik in its report said school authorities failed to provide "proper and timely medical care" to the student who had suffered asthama attack at the campus of the Modern School, Vasant Vihar, sources said.

The committee also noted that principal of the school did not take adequate steps to ensure proper medical treatment to the teenager who died on April 20 on the way to the hospital.

The Delhi government had constituted the panel on April 23 in the wake of public outrage over the death of Akkriti as students and the girl's parents had alleged that she died due to "negligence" by the school authorities.

"The committee has found serious lapses on the part of the principal too who the report said should have acted promptly in ensuring medical aid to the child," they said.

Taking serious view of the issue, the committee has also recommended steps for ensuring proper first aid medical facilities in the schools in the national capital.

"The schools should have doctors and trained nurses to deal with any such medical emergencies," the sources said.

However, when contacted Education Director of Delhi Government Chandrabhusan refused to divulge details saying the government was studying the report.

"We are examining the report and at this point of time we cannot disclose any details," he said.

The committee was asked to find out whether there was any lapse on the part of the school authorities leading to the death of Akkriti.

The committee was asked to file its report within 15 days but it had sought one more week to complete its probe which was granted.
