Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh's newly elected lawmakers today stood on their seats and threw posters and paper balls at the Governor as the state assembly met for the first time since the Yogi Adityanath government took charge.
Opposition Samajwadi Party legislators in red caps shouted slogans and threw posters with slogans on them at Governor Ram Naik, who was addressing the house on the opening session of the new assembly. As paper balls started flying at him, Mr Naik's security fenced him off and parried the missiles using files or books.
The opposition members, including those from the Congress, were protesting over law and order in the state. The governor's address was drowned out in the chaos. Almost the entire house was shouting and on its feet as the paper balls were thrown around. Yogi Adityanath was present in the house at the time.
This is the first assembly session after a new BJP government led by Yogi Adityanath came to power last month after a massive win in the UP election.
For the first time, the proceedings were telecast live by national broadcaster Doordarshan.
"The entire Uttar Pradesh is watching you," the Governor told the shouting members, who kept throwing papers.
Both the Samajwadi Party and Mayawati's BSP have decided to target the new government on the state of law and order, which has been one of its biggest challenges.
