Parliament Live Updates: The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha begins.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of his Council of Ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, took the oath as members of the 18th Lok Sabha as its first session began today.

President Droupadi Murmu administered oath to Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Bhartruhari Mahtab as the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Mr Mahtab then call upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Leader of the Lok Sabha, to take oath as a member of the House.

On June 26, the Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected. On June 27, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to address the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament.

This is the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha after the general elections, which saw the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secure 293 seats and the INDIA bloc win 234, with the Congress holding 100 of them.

18th Lok Sabha is a path to 'Amrit Kaal': PM Modi
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced on Monday with all the newly-elected members of the Parliament, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking oaths. This historic session marks the first time a swearing-in ceremony is being held in the new Parliament building since Independence.

Prime Minister Modi addressed the newly elected MPs, emphasising the significance of this session.

He said, "Today is a day of pride for our democracy. This election is particularly notable as, for the second time since Independence, a government has been given the mandate to serve for a third consecutive term."

Underscoring the importance and the scale of the general elections, PM Modi said, "The world's largest election was conducted in a great and magnificent manner. This third term reflects the people's recognition and acknowledgement of our party's intentions, policies, and contributions towards the public. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the nation for this opportunity."

The Prime Minister also praised the increased representation of youth in the 18th Lok Sabha, calling it a "matter of happiness."

Parliament LIVE Updates: PM Modi Begins Parliament Session With 'Emergency' Swipe At Congress
Starting off the first Parliament session in his third term on the front foot, the Prime Minister launched an 'Emergency' attack towards the main Opposition Congress before the Lok Sabha met this morning.

Addressing the media before the House met, the Prime Minister said this June 25 -- tomorrow -- will mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and called it a "black spot" on the country's democracy.

This Parliament sessions comes after the general elections and the Opposition is buoyed by its good show that restricted the BJP below the majority mark. The Prime Minister has returned to the top post with the support of NDA allies and the Opposition plans to use its numerical strength to corner the government on the House floor.

18th Lok Sabha Session Updates: PM Modi's Takes Oath As Third Time MP
Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes oath as member of the 18th Lok Sabha. 

This is the third term of PM Modi as a member of the Lok Sabha. He retained the Varanasi seat, which he has been winning since 2014. As Leader of the House, he was the first one to take oath.

Pro-tem Speaker Big BJP vs INDIA Flashpoint As 18th Lok Sabha Meets Today
The 18th Lok Sabha is set to meet for the first time today on a stormy note as the Opposition returns to the House with more strength than last time after the general election denied a majority to the ruling BJP.

Besides the protest surrounding irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, the selection of the pro-tem Speaker has emerged as a key flashpoint between the treasury and the Opposition benches.

The pro-tem Speaker is a temporary post and the House chooses a member from among the seniormost MPs for this position. The primary role of the pro-tem Speaker is to administer the oath to the new members.
