New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the three criminal code bills -- The Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023 -- to replace the colonial era Indian Penal Code and the CrPC. The lower house also passed the telecommunications Bill. The house adjourned for the day after passing the bills.
The bills were passed even as 143 members of the Opposition were suspended over the last two days.
Thomas Chazhikadan of the Kerala Congress (Mani) and A M Ariff of the CPI(M) were suspended for misconduct after a resolution moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi was adopted by the House.
This takes the number of suspended MPs in the Lok Sabha to 97. So far 143 opposition MPs have been suspended from the two Houses of Parliament.
