Accusing the Congress of "demeaning" President Droupadi Murmu, Union Minister Smriti Irani today protested in the Lok Sabha demanding an apology after its leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called her "Rashtrapatni".
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury swiftly apologised saying it was a mere slip of the tongue and the BJP is "making a mountain out of a molehill". He accused the BJP of distracting from crucial discussions on price rise, the Agnipath scheme, unemployment etc.

Centre Spent Rs 3,339 Crore On Advertisements Over 5-Year Period From 2017: Information And Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur
The government spent Rs 3,339.49 crore on advertisements in the print and electronic media over a five-year period from 2017, Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told the Rajya Sabha today.
In a written reply, Anurag Thakur said the government had spent Rs 1,756.48 crore on advertisements in the print media from 2017-18 till July 12 this year.
The expenditure on advertisements in the electronic media in the same period was Rs 1,583.01 crore.
The expenditure was incurred by the government through the Central Bureau of Communication, Anurag Thakur said.

Nirmala Sitharaman Alleges "Greater And Greater Aggression" By Sonia Gandhi
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today accused Sonia Gandhi of "greater and greater aggression" after an apparent confrontation between the Congress chief and Union Minister Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha over Congress MP and leader of opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's remarks on President Droupadi Murmu.
"Some of our Lok Sabha MPs felt threatened when Sonia Gandhi came up to our senior leader Rama Devi to find out what was happening during which, one of our members approached there and she (Sonia Gandhi) said you don't talk to me, putting the member down in the House," Ms Sitharaman told news agency ANI.
"So instead of remorse, from the highest leader of the Congress party, we find greater and greater aggression," the Finance Minister added.

"May I Help You?" Minister Smriti Irani Asked Sonia Gandhi, Row Followed
As the Lok Sabha descended into utter pandemonium today, Congress President Sonia Gandhi walked over to a BJP Member of Parliament (MP) to ask why she was being dragged into a row over party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's remark on President Droupadi Murmu. "What is my fault?" Sonia Gandhi is learnt to have asked Bihar MP Rama Devi. That's when Union Minister Smriti Irani stepped in and was seen gesturing towards her - apparently protesting Mr Chowdhury's "rashtrapatni" remark - leading to a brief, direct spat.
Rama Devi told the media that when Mrs Gandhi asked her what her fault was, "I replied that her fault is to have chosen Mr Chowdhury as the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha." In the middle of this conversation, Smriti Irani cut in. "Madam, may I help you? I took your name," she told Mrs Gandhi, according to sources.

Lok Sabha adjourned till 4 pm amid ruckus over Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's 'Rashtrapatni' remark
The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 4 pm on Thursday amid ruckus created by the BJP over Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's remarks addressing President Droupadi Murmu as "Rashtrapatni".
This was the second adjournment of the day.
The BJP has demanded an apology from Chowdhury and Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Chowdhary said that he had mistakenly used the term "Rashtrapatni" for President Murmu and that the ruling party was deliberately trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi said, "Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has already apologised."

3 more MPs suspended from Rajya Sabha for this week
Three more MPS, two from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and one Independent, were on Thursday suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of this week on charges of disrupting the proceedings of the House.
Those suspended from the House are AAP MP Sushil Kumar Gupta and Sandeep Kumar Pathak as well as independent MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan.
With this move, the total number of MPs suspended from the Rajya Sabha since Tuesday reached to 23.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh announced their suspension said that they entered the well of the House, shouted slogans and displayed placards by disrupting the proceedings in utter disregard to the House and the authority of the Chair.

Monsoon Session: Both Houses of Parliament adjourned till 12 noon
Both the Houses of the Parliament were adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday as BJP MPs demanded for an apology from the Congress over Congress MP Adhir Chowdhury's controversial remark against President Droupadi Murmu.
Union Minister Smriti Irani lashed out at the Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi in Lok Sabh claiming she had sanctioned the "humiliation" of Murmu.
"Sonia Gandhi, you sanctioned the humiliation of Droupadi Murmu. Sonia ji sanctioned humiliation of a woman in the highest constitutional post," said the Union minister.
Sonia Gandhi was present in the House before it was adjourned till 12 noon.
