New Delhi: BJP leader Om Birla was elected to the post of Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after a voice vote today. The vote for the post of Speaker was necessitated after the Centre and the opposition could not reach a consensus on a name leading to an election after decades.
Mr Birla, a three-time MP from Rajasthan's Kota and the Speaker in the last Lok Sabha, contested against Congress's pick K Suresh, an eight-term MP from Kerala's Mavelikara.
The vote for the post of Speaker considered the number of MPs present and voting. The NDA, which has 293 MPs in the 543-member Lok Sabha, enjoyed a clear majority, with the opposition INDIA bloc having 234 MPs.
PM Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi congratulated Mr Birla on being elected speaker and escorted him to his chair. The two leader also shook hands as they came together to welcome the newly appointed Speaker.
