The monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on August 12.

Parliament Session Highlights:

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which will amend the law governing Waqf boards, is likely to be introduced in the Parliament today. The bill aims to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995.

It also seeks to omit Section 40 of the current law relating to the powers of the Board to decide if a property is Waqf property. It provides for a broad-based composition of the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Boards and ensures the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies.

The monsoon session of Parliament commenced on July 22 and is scheduled to conclude on August 12.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the parliament today that the contentious LTCG tax proposal on real estate is being amended to give option to taxpayers to compute tax liability under the old system or at reduced rates without indexation, and pay the lower of the two. She said the rollover benefit will be available to taxpayers who buy new immovable property utilising the capital gains on the sale of old property.

Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha today urged the Centre to initiate talks with Pakistan to establish a safe corridor to Shri Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Shri Guru Nanak Dev.

In his address during the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the AAP leader drew parallels with the successful Sri Kartarpur Sahib corridor, which has united people in faith, and hoped that a similar corridor to Shri Nankana Sahib would foster shared spiritual connections.

Parliament Session: Rahul Gandhi Urges Centre To Declare Wayanad Calamity A "National Disaster"
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has urged the government to declare the recent calamity in Kerala's Wayanad a national disaster.

Speaking during Zero Hour, he also demanded higher compensation for the people affected.

Emphasising the need to declare the Wayanad landslides a national disaster, he said, "I saw it with my own eyes. I visited many different places where the disaster took place. In some cases, an entire family is gone, with just one person remaining, sometimes an adult or a child." He also expressed his gratitude to those who helped during the disaster.

"With more than 200 dead and a vast number missing, the eventual casualty count may exceed 400," Mr Gandhi said.

Parliament Session 2024: Congress Raises Dropping Of Preamble From NCERT textbooks, Minister Responds
Congress today raised in Rajya Sabha the issue of dropping of Preamble to the Constitution from certain NCERT textbooks saying this was an attempt to impose communal ideology on the country - a claim which Union Minister JP Nadda countered saying the government was committed to protecting the constitution.

Raising the issue, Leader of the Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said Preamble, which is the soul and foundation of the Indian Constitution, used to be published in NCERT textbooks.

Leader of the House and BJP president JP Nadda said though he has not seen either the NCERT textbook or the change but can with all authority state that there is no question of any needling of the Constitution.

Parliament Session 2024 LIVE Updates: Congress MP Wants Discussion On Caste-Based Census
Congress MP Manickam Tagore has given an adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha to discuss the issue of 'Caste-based Census'.

"I hereby give notice of my intention to ask for leave to a motion for the adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussing a definite matter of urgent importance, namely: Today I address the urgent need for a caste-based census," he said.


"The drastic budget cut for the Census to Rs 1,309,46 crore from Rs 3,768 crore raises concerns about the government's commitment to timely and effective data collection, which is crucial for social justice and targeted welfare for marginalized communities. The lack of necessary funds impacts the efficacy of this important process. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims at renaming the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995.

It seeks to omit Section 40 of the current law relating to the powers of the board to decide if a property is Waqf property.

It also provides for a broad-based composition of the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Boards and ensures the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies.

The bill also proposes the establishment of a separate Board of Auqaf for the Boharas and Aghakhanis. The draft law provides for the representation of Shias, Sunnis, Bohras, Agakhanis and other backward classes among Muslim communities.

The bill also aims to clearly define "'Waqf' as Waqf by any person practising Islam for at least five years and having ownership of such property".
