Parliament's Budget Session Highlights: Lok Sabha Adjourned For The Day Amid Protest Over Rising Fuel Prices

The Budget Session of Parliament, which commenced with the address of President Ram Nath Kovind on January 29, concluded on February 29.

The Lok Sabha has been adjourned for the day amid protest by Opposition over rising fuel prices.

Earlier, Speaker Om Birla appealed to protesting members several times to let the House function so that women members can raise their issues on International Women's Day. However, the Opposition continued to raised slogans.

The Trinamool Congress sought an adjournment of the Parliament session citing assembly elections in five states of the country. In a letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, TMC national spokesperson and RS member Derek O'Brien said due to the polls, MPs of his party would not be able to attend the Parliament session.

The Rajya Sabha will function from 9 am to 2 pm while Lok Sabha will function between 4 pm to 10 pm.

The Budget Session of Parliament, which commenced with the address of President Ram Nath Kovind on January 29, concluded on February 29. The Union budget was tabled in the Parliament by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1.

The Lok Sabha clocked 99.5 per cent productivity during the first phase of the two-part Budget session of Parliament, Lok Sabha Secretariat said. Birla informed that during the first part of the Budget Session 2021, Lok Sabha sat for 49 hours and 17 minutes against the stipulated time of 50 hours.

Congress, Shiv Sena Give Adjournment Motion Notices In Lok Sabha Over Fuel Price Hike

The Congress, Shiv Sena and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Monday gave adjournment motion notices in Lok Sabha over the continuous rise in petrol, diesel and LPG prices in the country.

Meanwhile, price of petrol in Delhi stands at Rs 91.17 per litre while that of diesel stands at Rs 81. 47, according to the Indian Oil Corporation.

Lok Sabha Adjourned For An Hour After Obituary References To 2 Sitting And 7 Former Members

The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Monday for an hour after obituary references to two sitting and seven former members.

The two sitting members who died recently are Mohan Delkar, 58, and Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan, 68.

Mr Delkar, a seven-term MP, allegedly ended his life on February 22. His body was found in a Mumbai hotel.

Mr Chauhan, a six-term MP, was suffering from COVID-19. He was airlifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram last month in a serious condition. He died on March 2.

Rajya Sabha will resume shortly. The house was adjourned till 11 am following sloganeering by Congress MPs demanding a discussion over the rise in fuel prices.

"Petrol and diesel prices are nearly Rs 100 per litre and Rs 80 per litre respectively. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices have also gone up. Rs 21 lakh crores have been collected by putting excise duty/cess, because of this entire country including farmers are suffering," Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said.

After slogans were raised, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu said: "I don''t want to take any drastic action on the first day."

The two Houses met today amid a scorching Assembly polls campaign, continuing farmer protest, and, most importantly, spiking petrol, diesel, and LPG prices. At least one party, the Trinamool Congress, has sought an adjournment because key state elections are only a few weeks away and MPs may not be able to attend.
