Party wants Congmen to shun feudal titles

Rajasthan: The Congress MP from Gwalior, Jyotiraditya Scindia, is not reluctant to carry his royal title the way many of his constituents still address him - King.

But now his party that won the elections on the plank of the Aam Aadmi wants all Congressmen to shun all feudal titles that signify aristocracy like Maharaja, Raja, Kunwar, Begum or Maharani.

The move will affect people like Rajkumari Ratna Singh who has won from Paratapgarh in UP, Kunwar RPN Singh, the MP from Kushinagar, also in UP, Begum Noor Bano who lost to Jaya Prada in Rampur and Rao Inderjit Singh the Congress MP from Gurgaon, Haryana.

The party says it believes there's no places for such titles in a democracy like India.

"This is a democracy. These people should decide not to use such titles," said Congress leader, Oscar Fernandes.

The Congress denies there was any immediate provocation for the move saying the party had been thinking about it for quite some time now.
