Passenger train derails after heavy storm in Jalpaiguri, 2 injured

Jalpaiguri (West Bengal): A heavy storm in Jalpaiguri district on Thursday affected surface communication and led to derailment of four bogies of a passenger train, railway officials said. Two people were injured as tracks lay blocked with uprooted trees, they added.

A relief van from Alipurduar was yet to reach Madarahit where passengers of the Siliguri-Alipurduar passenger train are stuck, officials said.

Madarahit Block Development Officer Hirak Mondal, who has not been able to reach the spot as the roads too are blocked, said police officers are already on the spot but no casualties are feared.

Railway tracks in many parts of the Dooars forest are surrounded by trees on both sides.

Officials said many parts of the state roadways and the NH-31 remain blocked by uprooted trees and electric poles.

Electric supply has also been disrupted as a result along with damages to many huts in the region.
