The Gujarat Chief Minister has a three-tier security grid around him.
New Delhi:
Even as controversy rages over allegations of security lapses by the Bihar Police during Narendra Modi's 'hunkar' rally in Patna on Sunday, here's a look at the security cordon around one of the most protected chief ministers in the country.
The Gujarat Chief Minister has a three-tier security grid around him.
The innermost cordon of his security, and the most crucial, is formed by the National Security Guard or NSG commandos. The 63-year-old leader is flanked by at least 80 to 100 NSG commandos at any given point of time.
Sources say Mr Modi has been given the NSG security because of the threats to his life from terror outfits.
However, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate is not the only Chief Minister to enjoy NSG security in the country. Others like Tamil Nadu's J Jayalalithaa and Assam's Tarun Gogoi also have the elite protection because of the serious threats to their security they face because of specific issues in their states.
Mr Modi's second level of security is made up of personnel from the Chief Minister's security wing, which is under the control of the state Intelligence Bureau. A senior police officer supervises this level.
Around 7 to 8 officials from this security wing accompany Mr Modi when he travels out of the state.
The outermost security cover is the responsibility of the local police in whose jurisdiction Mr Modi is moving. It is this third grid which is responsible for access control, checks and sanitation, and where most of the security failures appear to have taken place at Patna.
