Pawar's daughter backs Thackeray meet

Mumbai: A day after NCP chief Sharad Pawar met Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule has told NDTV that too much should not be read into the meeting.

"The two are old friends. And if some issues can be resolved at personal level, why bother the Government at all?" Sule, a Member of Parliament, said.

Pawar had met Thackeray at the Sena chief's 'Matoshree' residence in Bandra on Sunday night, after the Sena threatened not to allow Australians to play in the IPL. "We told Balasaheb that the Australian team will not participate in the IPL, but each IPL team will have one or two Australians," Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar, who had accompanied Pawar, said.

The two-hour meeting came just days after Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi took on the Shiv Sena in its home turf Mumbai, saying,  "I am not interested in what Uddhav or Bal Thackeray have to say."

Perhaps the deeper significance of Pawar's visit was to snub the Congress, which has cornered Pawar on the price rise issue. (Read: Congress attacks Pawar over prices, Thackeray)

Earlier this month, the Home Minister had spoken on the subject after the Shiv Sena threat. Rejecting their stand, he had said all security will be provided to the Australian players and the matches would take place in Mumbai.
