Petition challenging Singur Act to be heard today

Petition challenging Singur Act to be heard today
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed that the Tata Motors Limited's petition challenging the Singur Land Development and Rehabilitation Act 2011 would be heard on Friday after the West Bengal government did not oppose its amendment application.

An application by Tata Motors Limited to amend certain points in the original application was not opposed by the government, following which Justice Saumitra Pal allowed it and directed that the matter would be taken up for hearing on Friday.

Tata Motors had on July 4 filed an amendment in the High Court to amend its original petition filed on June 22 challenging the Singur Act.

Tata Motors Limited has claimed that the original petition was filed "in great hurry as we were dispossessed on the night of June 21. The amendment places on record facts and developments which could not be incorporated in the petition that night. This had led to technical objections, which have now been taken care of," it said.

The West Bengal government in its submissions had stated that though the petitioners had claimed status quo on fears that it would be dispossessed of the land at Singur, infact the possession had already been taken by the state on June 21, following notification of the Act.

Tata Motors has obtained a stay in distribution of land to 'unwilling farmers' at Singur from the Supreme Court after the Calcutta High Court refused such a reprieve to the company.
