Petrol price hike: Top 10 comments from ndtv.com surfers
We asked for your comments on India's steepest-ever petrol price hike. Here are the top 10 comments (pls note some have been shortened).

Venu: We are ready to pay 85 rs/liter if helps these oil companies. Government, can you please stop spending on foreign tours, boasting advertisements etc? We struggle to earn money not to spend on politicians.

Sudarshan: Not surprised. Importing crude oil is costing the country a huge amount of money. We cannot expect the prices to stay as they are. We citizens have to cut oil consumption. Most of the elite and middle class own cars to go to office etc. Instead why dont we use the public transport whenever we can? This can substantially help in reducing consumption

Manjunath: The State Governments can help the common man by reducing some % of taxes that they collect.. We pay nearly 40 to 50 % of the fuel cost as taxes... Why don't the governments do something on this rather than just telling the price of fuel has gone up...Take a cue from the Goa Govt.

Subhasis: Any price hike is a burden to the consumer. The petrol price hike is due to international price level. Oil companies need to do business not politics. Common sense should prevail over populism

irfan: Like always the Indian people will take the hike as a part of their lives and will continue to bear, but for how long? Someday we will wake up and shake the system I hope.

jc: How does a petrol rate hike affect any politician? its only the common man who shares the burden. remove the taxes on each litre and the price will halve

Venu: We are ready to pay 85 rs/liter if helps these oil companies. Government, can you please stop spending on foreign tours, boasting advertisements etc? We struggle to earn money not to spend on politicians.

Abhishek: We have an entire generation of people who have grown on subsidies. Its the fault of the Govt. They never allowed people to carry their own weight. Now when it is impossible to bear the overbearing subsidy bill, the Govt is feeling the heat

GV Ganesan: It is the common man who always bears the brunt. There is no austerity measures as far as politicians and ministers concerned. The motorcade, foreign trips, free power, communication, etc are not stopped nor limited

Sanjay Agarwal: Over Rs.7 hike in petrol price includes alomost 50% towards Taxes to Central and State govt. Why Centre and state Govt. (WB,UP,TN etc.) want to collect more money from taxes. They can very well rationalise taxes (by reducing tax rates) to reduce impact of hike to half.
