PM inaugurates conference of chief ministers, judges today; judicial reforms on agenda
New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated a conference of chief ministers and judges in the national capital. The meet, presided over by Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir, aims to address pressing issues related to the country's justice delivery system that's often criticised for being tardy. A series of judicial reforms is also on the agenda.

Chief Ministers and law secretaries of all states as well as judges from the Supreme Court and Chief Justices of all 24 High Courts have been invited to the conference that has been organised by the Law and Justice ministry. The last such conference was held in August 2009.

Among the proposals likely to be discussed at today's conference are the demand for doubling the existing number of district and subordinate courts, filling vacancies in High Courts and lower courts, setting up of fast-track courts and improving the infrastructure required to expedite trials. There are over three crore pending cases in various courts in the country.
