Addu, Maldives: For the first time since they watched a cricket match together in India in March this year, the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan are meeting. Dr Manmohan Singh is meeting his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani in the Maldives, where delegations from both countries are attending the 17th annual South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit.
Dr Singh and Mr Gilani are holding a 90-minute meeting, which will be followed by statements to the press. Recent weeks have seen positive developments with Pakistan awarding the Most Favoured Nation status ti India last week -a move that will boost trade across the border. India's Foreign Minister SM Krishna said yesterday that the trust deficit between India and Pakistan is shrinking.
Ties between the two countries had hit an all-time low after the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai, in which 166 people were killed by 10 Pakistani terrorists. The first signs of a thaw came at the 2010 SAARC meet in Bhutan's Thimpu, where Dr Singh and Mr Gilani went on a much-headlined walk together, and expressed the desire to restart dialogue between the two countries.
