New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of Manipur Governor Syed Ahmed, saying he was saddened at the demise of an "experienced leader" who held many positions.
"Manipur Governor Shri Syed Ahmed was an experienced leader who held many positions in his long political career.
Saddened by his demise. RIP," tweeted PM Modi, who is currently in San Jose in the USA on a visit.
Ahmed passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai this morning. He was suffering from cancer and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra last week, they said.
He was 73 and is survived by wife, one son and two daughters.
He was sworn in as the Governor of Manipur on May 16, 2015. Ahmed, a former Congress leader from Maharashtra, was shifted to the north-eastern State from Jharkhand, where he was appointed Governor on August 26, 2011 when the UPA Government was in power at the Centre.
